Riebeek-Kasteel is one of the oldest towns in South Africa, situated 80 km north-east of Cape Town in The Riebeek Valley together with its sister town Riebeek West. After the Dutch landed, they set off in the direction of Paardeberg and on 3 February 1661 they ascended a lonely mountain and came upon the fertile vista of the Riebeek Valley. They named it Riebeek Kasteel, in honor of the Commander Jan Van Riebeek.
An interesting fact is that Jan Smuts and Daniel Malan were born in the Riebeek Valley and both went on to become prime ministers.
Riebeek Kasteel is buzzing with cultural and community activity with highlights being the annual Olive Festival and the Solo Art Studios weekends. Riebeek Kasteel boasts many art galleries, fine restaurants, a perfect and popular weekend destination and exceptional wine and olive farms. Dubbed the mini Franschhoek, this gem of the Swartland is fast becoming a very popular tourist destination for both local and foreign travelers. The new Cape Town international airport currently under construction, is a mere 60 km away in the winelands which will grant even quicker and easier access to the Riebeek valley and the rest of the Swartland.
